Alex Pardee's TUMBLRCULOSIS

Dedicated to Owen Wright, who contracted Tumblrculosis
and exploded in his sleep.
I'm rad.
Exactly 10 years ago, The Used’s “In Love & Death” was released into stores back when stores were real. This was the first major commercial job that I had worked on at that point and over the course of those 6 months, I learned more than Bill & Ted learned over the course of two films and hundreds of years of time travel. Quinn hunted me down and flew me to LA while they were in the middle of recording the album and we all hit it off instantly. Jeph, Bert, Branden and Quinn took me in like a hungry little art puppy and fed me ideas until I was so full that I had no choice but to vomit out drawings after drawings. Using the songs and their experiences as inspiration, together we created almost 20 different album covers and concepts (some made it to the inside booklet), and moments before the very last meeting with the label I had one last idea that I felt encompassed the whole album and the whole band at that time since I had been spending so much time with them. This is what came out of those last few minutes, and it’s one of the pieces of artwork that I am extremely proud of. We continued to work together side by side for 5 straight years following this album release and I continue to be proud of Quinn, Jeph, Bert, Branden and Dan to this day. Thank you @theused . Love you dudes.

I was asked to make fun of @sirmitchell at #Mondocon but I chose to fantasize about him instead and draw my ideal Mike, or at least the Mike that would make me laugh hysterically every time we went in the spa. Because that’s the kind of thing we do I think. In my fantasy. Go follow the human @sirmitchell he’s one of us. (And featured in the @zerofriendsart book!)

I’m still pretty oozing with smiles from #Mondocon and still and have some photos to post. But none of them will be cooler or nerdier than this photo, shot by @thenerdfu. This was the moment, on our Designing Movies panel, that I got to tell Bernie Wrightson that I have had my Creepshow comic by my side since the day my dad got it for me when I was 9, and not only did I get to show it to him, but he signed it in 3 places just in case it kept falling more apart. It was the best. I’m happy. Thanks @mondotees for the assist, and letting me slam dunk my childhood in Bernie’s beautiful face. #zerofriends

BUNNYWITH NO SPINE.

BUNNYWITH NO SPINE.

Last year I met a guy who knew a guy who supposedly had genuine invisibility potions for sale. Being the gullible friend and the impulse spender that I am, I bought a couple bottles, not expecting much more than a 5-hour-energy clone and clogged bowels. Long story short, however, while trying to avoid talking to someone about saving the environment outside of Trader Joe’s, I quickly downed a bottle as a defense mechanism and discovered that IT WORKED!!!!!

Anyway, like Darkman’s skin, the effect only lasted a couple of hours, so I knew that if I was going to use the other bottle, it had to be worth it.

Flash forward to March of this year, and while “hiding” in the bushes around the Arclight in Hollywood, I recognized a film director named Joe Lynch taking a piss on my feet. As a fan of his, I didn’t flinch. I just stared. At his urine. And my feet. And I got really nervous. But I didn’t budge. He had no idea I was there, getting drenched. He turned around and started talking to his friends, and I overheard him saying that he finished his latest movie and wanted to show them privately. Based on the simple fact that Joe Lynch’s “TRUTH IN JOURNALISM" short film is one of my favorite shorts ever, I knew I NEEDED to see whatever he was showing his friends. This was a perfect chance to use my last invisibility potion. So I followed Joe. Turns out he wasn’t showing it THAT DAY, so I followed him for a couple weeks, moving from bush to bush. But eventually, it was about to happen. So I gulped down the potion, walked right inside his screening room, practically holding invisible hands with his fellow director-friend Adam Green, and just stood there, invisibly, as Joe Lynch pushed play on the projector. And what I saw was something that I had never seen before: a little film called "EVERLY”.

I escaped Joe’s presence before becoming re-visible, and I went home, beyond satisfied at what I saw, despite not being able to tell anyone what, exactly, I saw. Over the next few days, “EVERLY” stayed with me. I kept replaying scenes in my head. I kept wanting to see it again. I searched for information about it online. I found nothing. Since I couldn’t actually watch “EVERLY” again, I started watching movies that seemed to inspire it. Again, nothing could satisfy me. So, like the infamous man who had seen a demon but was sworn to secrecy, I decided I needed to draw something inspired by it with the hopes that I will feel better. And so I did. And I never showed anyone. It was MY secret. MY curse.

But now, months later, Joe Lynch’s “EVERLY” is about to premiere at Austin’s "FANTASTIC FEST" this Saturday if you like being intrigued, smiling, wincing at extreme violence and cheering at the silver screen in the dark. and I urge you to go see it, whether you are invisible or not.

Here is the poster I made for “EVERLY”, inspired by EVERLYthing I felt while being invisible that day. Thank you Joe, for making me feel all kinds of ways, especially with a Christmas movie.

EVERLY premieres at FANTASTIC FEST this weekend. Go see it.

Love, Alex Pardee
